Q:
I purchased a gown off the rack last year and took it home when it was paid in full. I have now decided that it is too much gown, is now is too small and would like to exchange if for another gown. They are now telling me that there is a $100.00 alteration to resize the gown to fit. The store is giving me a hard time and will not take it back for credit. What should I do? Pamela, Hamilton

A:
Unfortunately bridal shops are not financially set up the same as Mega Department Stores. Very few stores will let you return for exchange or refund especially when the gown has been removed from the shop.
It sound like you have gained weight as well. Most gowns can be altered out at least two sizes. Each size equates to 10 pounds. There are very few places to have your gown altered at no charge. Most alterations today are costing brides an average of $150 or more depending on how much work has to be done. It is anyone's guess how a gown will be altered. If you wear a bustierre and crinoline, you may not need an alteration. However, you will have a purchase that will probably cost more than the seamstress bill.
